Best DHEA Supplements (2026)

Last reviewed Aug 202610 products scoredTop score87/100

Clinical dose: 25-50mg/day in the morning for adults over 40 with low DHEA-S; adrenal insufficiency replacement uses prescribed 25-50mg/day

Bottom line

In our scoring, DHEA rates mixed evidence: the evidence is mixed for replacement therapy in adrenal insufficiency. Our top-scored product is DHEA 25 mg (87/100), about $0.11 a day at a clinical dose of 25-50mg/day in the morning for adults over 40 with low DHEA-S. Bottom line: promising but not settled, so manage expectations. This is our opinion, not medical advice; talk to your clinician before starting.

What to know first

DHEA is a hormone sold as a supplement, and that framing should shape everything about how you approach this page. Two things follow from it. First, DHEA is banned by WADA, the NCAA, MLB, the NFL and most major sports bodies, so if you compete at any level, at any age, this category is closed to you and no product on this page changes that.

Second, the reason to buy is narrower than the marketing: the evidence is strongest for diagnosed adrenal insufficiency at 25 to 50mg a day, while the general anti-aging case that sells most of it is largely unsupported by the larger trials. The other thing worth knowing before comparing prices is that quality control across this category is genuinely poor.

Independent testing has repeatedly found products whose actual DHEA content does not match the label, which makes a published certificate of analysis the single most important thing on a DHEA label and more important than the cost per dose. We scored these on dose accuracy, purity verification, transparency and cost.

Skip this category entirely if you are under 40, pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any history of hormone-sensitive cancer (breast, prostate, ovarian, uterine) or liver disease, and treat starting it as a conversation with your doctor rather than a shopping decision. The full DHEA scorecard carries the evidence grades by claim and the full contraindication list.

The Verdict

Life Extension DHEA 25mg is our Top Pick at $0.11 per dose. It scores 87, the highest here, at the standard studied dose and from a brand with a long testing record, which in a category with this much label-content variance is what you are actually paying for. Nutricost 25mg is the Best Value at $0.06 per dose, roughly half the Top Pick, and it is a reasonable choice if cost is the constraint. Pure Encapsulations 25mg at $0.26 is the pick if you want the strictest manufacturing standards and hypoallergenic formulation, at more than double the Top Pick.

Pure Encapsulations also makes a 5mg version at $0.23, which is for careful titration rather than value: reaching 25mg that way means five capsules a day at $0.23 each, roughly ten times the Top Pick. Life Extension's 100mg product is 7-keto DHEA, a different compound that will not produce the hormonal effects people buy DHEA for, so do not substitute it. And the point that outranks all of these: this is a hormone, it is banned in competitive sport, and it should be started with a doctor rather than on the strength of a scorecard.

Why a certificate of analysis matters more than price here

Because independent testing keeps finding DHEA products whose actual content does not match what the label claims, and you cannot detect that yourself.

With most supplements a label-content mismatch means you wasted money. With a hormone it means you took an unknown dose of something that affects your endocrine system, which is a materially different problem. That is why our scoring weights purity verification heavily in this category and why the cheapest option is not automatically the right one.

What the products here actually cost per dose:

  • Nutricost 25mg: $0.06. Our Best Value. Nutricost 50mg: $0.07.
  • Life Extension 25mg: $0.11. Our Top Pick.
  • Country Life 25mg: $0.18. Pure Encapsulations 5mg: $0.23.
  • Pure Encapsulations 25mg: $0.26, the strictest manufacturing standards here.
  • Life Extension 7-keto 100mg: $0.51, and a different compound entirely.

The spread between the cheapest and the Top Pick is about five cents a dose. That is a small enough gap that in this specific category we would not optimise for it, and would take the brand with the better testing record instead. The scorecard shows what each brand's testing actually covers.

Who should not take DHEA at all

This list is longer than for almost anything else we score, and it is the part of the page that matters most.

Anyone who competes in sport, at any level. DHEA is banned by WADA, the NCAA, MLB, the NFL and most major governing bodies. This is not a grey area and no formulation on this page is compliant.

Anyone under 40. DHEA levels decline with age, which is the entire premise for supplementing it. Below 40 there is generally nothing to correct, and you are adding a hormone to a system that is producing its own.

Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone with a history of hormone-sensitive cancer, meaning breast, prostate, ovarian or uterine. DHEA converts into both estrogen and testosterone in the body, which is precisely the mechanism that makes it a concern in those cases. Anyone with liver disease should also avoid it.

That leaves a fairly narrow group, and even within it the strongest evidence is for diagnosed adrenal insufficiency rather than the general anti-aging use that sells most of the category. If you are in that group, the conversation to have is with a doctor who can measure your levels, not with a product page. Our scorecard lays out what each claim's evidence actually supports.

What to Look For When Buying

  • Banned by WADA, the NCAA, MLB, the NFL and most sports bodies, so competitors at any level should not take it
  • The studied range is 25-50mg daily, and the evidence is strongest for diagnosed adrenal insufficiency rather than general anti-aging use
  • A published per-lot certificate of analysis matters more than price here, because independent testing keeps finding label-content mismatches in this category
  • 25mg is the standard starting dose; 5mg products exist for careful titration but work out far more expensive per milligram
  • 7-keto DHEA is a different compound and does not produce the hormonal effects of regular DHEA, so do not treat the two as interchangeable
  • Do not start it if you are under 40, pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a history of hormone-sensitive cancer or liver disease

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between DHEA and 7-keto DHEA?

7-keto DHEA is a metabolite of DHEA that does not convert to androgens or estrogens in the body. It is marketed for thermogenesis and weight management at 100-200mg/day. The two are not interchangeable. Regular DHEA gives you hormonal effects (good or bad) because it converts to testosterone and estrogen. 7-keto does not, which means it also does not give you the mood, libido, or bone benefits attributed to regular DHEA. If your goal is hormonal, you want micronized DHEA. If you specifically want a non-hormonal compound, 7-keto is a different product.

Is DHEA banned in sports?

Yes. DHEA is on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list as an anabolic agent and is banned by the NCAA, MLB, NFL, NBA, FIFA, the IOC, and most other major sporting bodies at all times, in and out of competition. A positive test will result in suspension. If you are subject to drug testing at any level, do not take DHEA, including products labeled as 7-keto if they are not third-party sport certified, because cross-contamination is a known issue in the supplement category.

Should young people take DHEA?

No. Your DHEA-S level is naturally at its lifetime peak in your 20s and early 30s. Supplementing on top of normal levels is unstudied, has no demonstrated benefit, and exposes you to androgenic side effects (acne, hair changes, voice deepening in women) and theoretical hormone-sensitive cancer risk. Most clinical research is in adults over 50. If you are under 40 and have symptoms you think are hormonal, get blood tests for testosterone, estradiol, thyroid, and DHEA-S before reaching for any hormonal supplement.

Should I get a DHEA blood test before taking it?

Yes. A baseline DHEA-S (the sulfated form, the standard blood test) tells you whether your levels are actually low for your age. If you are in the normal range, you do not need supplementation, and adding hormone on top of normal levels is not recommended. If you do supplement, recheck DHEA-S, total testosterone, and estradiol at 3 months to confirm levels are in a physiologic range and not pushed above. Many adults with vague fatigue or low libido symptoms have normal DHEA-S, and the cause is something else.

Does DHEA interact with hormone medications?

Yes. DHEA can affect the action of estrogen replacement therapy, testosterone replacement, oral contraceptives, tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors, and corticosteroids, because DHEA converts to both androgens and estrogens in peripheral tissues. It may also interact with insulin and blood sugar medications, anticoagulants, and some antidepressants. Do not start DHEA if you are on any hormonal therapy without an endocrinologist or oncologist consult. The interaction risk is real, not theoretical.
